The Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey is about twelve miles long and half a mile wide, containing 2,500 acres of wild Hudson River shorefront, uplands, and cliffs just minutes from midtown Manhattan. It is the original component of a unique interstate park system that now contains over 100,000 acres managed jointly by the states of New Jersey and New York.
In the 1890s, massive stone quarries used dynamite to blast the Palisades for crushed stone that could be sold for building railroads and other industrial uses. There was a real fear that the beauty of the scenery would be lost forever. The people of the states of New Jersey and New York pushed their governments to create a unique agency to protect the land.
The park welcomes everyone to enjoy the scenery on foot, by water, or bicycle, Park goers can participate in organized activites developed by the commission, cycle it’s many miles of paths, kayak along the river, or sped time fishing. Hikers and cross-country skiers have over 30 miles of trails to discover, ranging from gentle riverside strolls to challenging rock scrambles.
For over a century, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission has preserved this irreplaceable scenery for the people of New Jersey, New York, and the world!
