Duel on the Delaware - NJAISA vs. Penn-Del Climbing Event

  • Washington's Crossing State Park (map)

Come out to this historic park to see a new history being created when we challenge the Penn-Del chapter in this inaugural competition. Bring some friends and cheer on the New Jersey team. If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity, please send us an email at njarboristsisa@gmail.com

Location:

355 Washington Crossing Pennington Rd, Titusville, NJ 08560

The event location is intended to alternate between host chapters annually, however, it should be located near the Delaware for equal access.  For the inaugural event, the New Jersey Chapter is challenging Penn-Del chapter to a competition at Washington’s Crossing State Park in New Jersey.

Teams:

This will be a team event utilizing 5 competitors and one alternate.  This event will mimic a climbing jamboree more so than a sanctioned ISA competition.  Competitors must be a member of the chapter they are representing but there is no residency requirement provided the competitor works in your state(s).  Each chapter will submit the names of ten competitors; the opposing team will blindly select five plus one alternate to form the other chapter’s team.

The Duel on the Delaware is intended to be a team event culminating in a chapter win as opposed to an individual win representing each chapter.  The teams should accrue more points by working well together.

Competition:

The competition will consist of three events at approximately 20-30 mins each: two climbing, and one on rigging.  Points will be awarded based on objective metrics (not subjective).  The team amassing the most points at the conclusion of the day will be the winner and will hold the title of Champion of the Duel on the Delaware and accompanying award until the next competition.

  • This year, the climbing events will work more like a work climb with different tasks to be performed throughout several different trees utilizing the whole team.  The team will have to delegate members to different tasks perhaps including someone on the ground.  Teams will be able to watch each other compete in the climbing events.

  • The rigging event will focus on rigging, lifting, moving and lowering objects up and through canopies and obstacles and lowering them safely into targets zones.  For this event, teams will not be able to watch the other team perform.

Insurance

the host chapter will be responsible for the insurance coverage not less than 1 million dollars for spectators, participants, and the host site.  They will also assume responsibility for creating necessary releases for participants.

Host Chapter

The host chapter must set up the event without disclosing any details to its competitors (further and more specific details to follow).  It is incumbent on the host chapter to maintain this integrity.

The host chapter will be responsible for acquiring insurance coverage not less than one million dollars for spectators, participants, and the host site.  They will also assume responsibility for creating necessary releases for participants.

Gear shall be supplied by the host chapter, with the exception of climbing gear.

Judging

A “Head Tech” and a CTSP shall both be provided from the host chapter. Four judges shall be used – two from each chapter.  Each chapter may select their own judges.  The events shall be set up with as objective scoring as possible (i.e. not subjective – competitor rang the bell or didn’t, competitor landed in ring or didn’t).  The goal is to avoid discretionary points as much as possible.

As we prepare the day’s events details may change slightly.  It is understood that since this is not an official, sanctioned event there may be some unforeseen challenges along the way and the event is done in the spirit of good competition among the most professional arborists.  We look forward to a day of spirited competition and wish you the best of luck.  See you on the Delaware!
